Case (Gen Exp)
A university student is working on a group project for a case-based business ethics course. Just over a week before the project deadline, one of her fellow group members reveals that he has found part (B) of the assigned case on the Internet. He has read this document, which specifies exactly what the company has done to address the challenge in the case they are working on. It is clear to the protagonist that her group cannot use this information, but she is unsure of how to handle the situation.
Learning Objective:
For a business ethics course, this case can be used to introduce the Giving Voice to Values perspective on value conflicts — how to deal constructively and non-confrontationally with pressure to compromise personal values. Students can easily relate to the situation and protagonist, so it is a good “participation stimulator” for a case-method course in any discipline, and can open a discussion about academic integrity in the case method and whether it is acceptable to seek out information past the decision point in a case. Too Much Information (B), included in the teaching note, presents the situation from the professor’s perspective, which highlights that instructors also face ethical issues around the integrity of grading. As such, it could be used for instructor training.
