A young entry-level employee starts work in the hotel industry in Eastern Europe. The case describes her experiences and shows the HRM practices in the particular hotel in which she works. The issue for analysis is less whether or not the employee should stay or leave this hotel, which has minimal pay and poor working conditions, and more the overall nature of human resources (HR) operations at this service organization, with regard to ethics and sustainability.
This case was written for master’s-level students, or students who have already completed at least a basic-level HRM course. It was written from the point of view of an inexperienced young employee to illustrate what such an employee sees in a business operation. It can be used to go through the HRM functions at a company and show what has gone wrong and how it can be remedied. It can also be used as a leadership course supplement, or in change management courses to illustrate leadership practices and ethical dilemmas. The specific objectives include:
- A systematic analysis of HRM functions and their significance in the continuous operations of a service organization.
- Analysis of the relationship between management practice with respect to employees and service quality.
- Evaluation of certain HRM practices in a transition economy from the point of view of ethics.
- Providing an understanding of the importance of ethical management in building a sustainable organization.
