Victoria Heavy Equipment (Victoria) was a family owned and managed firm which had been led by an ambitious, entrepreneurial chief executive officer who now wanted to take a less active role in the business. Victoria had been through two reorganizations in recent years, which contributed to organizational and strategic issues which would need to be addressed by a new president.
The primary objective is to probe with the students the relative merits of using each of the organization design variables (systems, structure, or staffing) to achieve both stated and unstated objectives. While Walters has a particular interest in the question of succession, there are also issues of performance, worker and manager tension, and Walters' future role in the company to be resolved.
This case can be used in such courses as Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Family Business.
