Vlaad and Company: Recruiting Women in the Capital Markets
(7 pages of text)
Vlaad and Company, a recruiting firm specializing in the Canadian capital markets, has embarked upon an initiative to recruit more women to capital markets jobs. The case describes the early stages of this initiative and provides six examples of capital markets job candidates — four women and two men. The director of the women in capital markets initiative must decide which of these six candidates, if any, to present to client firms. She must also think about the design of the women in capital markets initiative.
The first objective is for students to discuss an organizational program designed to move women into a heavily male-dominated industry. This discussion provides opportunities for students to outline the business argument for diversity and consider the effective design of organizational change initiatives. The second purpose is for students to discuss self-presentation strategies in job interviews. Six detailed mini-cases are included in the case. Discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates’ approaches helps students hone their job interviewing strategies.
