Case (Gen Exp)
An effective and highly motivated executive at 3DP Incorporated, a company that specialized in manufacturing objects with three-dimensional printing, often told his friends that he thought he could be the next Steve Jobs. He wanted to take advantage of the “next great opportunity” to change the world by producing and marketing his own creations. However, his inability to deal effectively with his subordinates, peers, and superiors, as shown by instances of abrasive behaviour throughout the cases, contributed to his eventual downfall.
The case can be used in courses or modules on leadership, leadership development, and careers at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The case can also be used at the executive level. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to do the following:
- Understand the need for reflection in the learning-to-lead process in order to develop self-awareness, which is essential to good leadership and leadership development.
- Appreciate the importance of coaching, mentoring, and feedback for developmental purposes and hence personal growth as a leader.
- Develop an understanding of how to actively manage a leadership career and the importance to always figure out what is needed to be successful in the next job or leadership position.
- Formulate a solid understanding of the factors that contribute to career derailment.
